Women’s Trafficking Prevention Initiative in Nepal
Introduction to the project
Women’s Trafficking Prevention Initiative in Nepal is a volunteer project to prevent women and girls from being trafficked. Trafficking is a form of modern-day slavery that involves exploiting people for labour or sexual purposes. In Nepal, women and girls are particularly vulnerable to trafficking due to poverty, lack of education, and social stigma.
This project allows women and girls to receive training, education, and support services to help them protect themselves from trafficking. We also work to raise awareness about the issue of trafficking and to advocate for policies that will help to prevent it.
Statistics
- According to the United Nations, an estimated 21 million are victims of modern-day slavery worldwide.
- Approximately 71% of human trafficking victims worldwide are women and girls, often subjected to sexual exploitation and forced labour.
- In Nepal, many women and girls are trafficked yearly, primarily for commercial sexual exploitation.
- Nepal is a source, transit, and destination country for human trafficking.
- Socio-economic vulnerabilities, gender inequality, and lack of awareness contribute to the prevalence of women’s trafficking in Nepal.
Goals
- Raise awareness about the risks and consequences of women’s trafficking among vulnerable communities.
- Prevent women and girls from being trafficked through education, advocacy, and community empowerment.
- Strengthen local networks and partnerships to combat women’s trafficking and support survivors.
- Enhance the capacity of local organisations to identify, report, and respond to cases of trafficking.
- Promote gender equality, empower women, and advocate for policy changes to prevent trafficking.

This project aligns with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), specifically:
- SDG 5: Gender Equality
